The American Brass Quintet is internationally recognized as one of the premier chamber music ensembles of our time, celebrated for peerless leadership in the brass world. As 2013 recipient of Chamber Music America’s highest honor, the Richard J. Bogomolny National Service Award for significant and lasting contributions to the field, ABQ’s rich history includes performances in Asia, Australia, Central and South America, Europe, the Middle East and all fifty of the United States; a discography of nearly sixty recordings; and the premieres of over one hundred fifty contemporary brass works.
The ABQ’s Emerging Composer Commissioning program has brought forth brass quintets by Gordon Beeferman, Jay Greenberg, Trevor Gureckis, and Shafer Mahoney.
Committed to the promotion of brass chamber music through education, the American Brass Quintet has been in residence at The Juilliard School since 1987 and the Aspen Music Festival since 1970. Since 2000 the ABQ has offered its expertise in chamber music performance and training with a program of mini-residencies as part of its regular touring. Designed to offer young groups and individuals an intense chamber music experience over several days, ABQ mini-residencies have been embraced by schools and communities throughout the United States and a dozen foreign countries.

Nathaniel Dett Chorale

The Nathaniel Dett Chorale is Canada’s first professional choral group dedicated to Afrocentric music of all styles, including classical, spiritual, gospel, jazz, folk and blues. The 21 classically-trained, outstanding vocalists of The Nathaniel Dett Chorale have shared the stage with internationally recognized artists such as Juno Award-winning jazz pianist Joe Sealy, singers Molly Johnson and Jackie Richardson, and opera star Kathleen Battle and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The ensemble has performed for such luminaries as opera singer Jessye Norman and Dance Theatre of Harlem founder Arthur Mitchell.
The Chorale has performed at events honouring world leaders Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, personality Muhammad Ali, and pianist Oscar Peterson and was the only Canadian ensemble invited to perform as part of the celebrations surrounding the historic inauguration of President Barack Obama in January of 2009.
The Chorale’s vision is to be a premier performer of Afrocentric composers – past, present and future – and to be a touchstone for the education of audiences and communities regarding the full spectrum of Afrocentric choral music.
The Nathaniel Dett Chorale’s mission is to build bridges of understanding, appreciation, and acceptance between communities of people, both Afrocentric and other, through the medium of music. The Chorale seeks to dissolve the barriers of stereotype, to empower humans in general, and those of African descent in particular.
The Chorale adds another dimension to all of its activities by creating a cultural and historical context for its music. All of the Chorale’s concerts and outreach initiatives include an educational element, and our conductor and singers draw audiences together by increasing their knowledge of Afrocentric music and culture, with the aim of fostering pride in those of African heritage, and informed admiration in those of other cultural backgrounds. The Chorale builds vibrant and healthy communities by uniting its audiences in a love of Afrocentric choral music, and by creating a deeply-contextualized understanding of the complex roots of this music.

Dr.Peter Latona, Organ

Peter Latona is the Music Director for the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (Washington, D.C.) the pre-eminent Marian shrine of the Catholic Church in the United States where, amid the largest collection of modern ecclesiastical art in the world, hundreds of thousands gather each year for worship and prayer. An award-winning organist, Dr. Latona performs in the U.S. and in Europe, has presented workshops on improvisation, and has released a recording, An Organ Pilgrimage, on the Raven label, featuring all four pipe organs at the Basilica. As the conductor of the Choir of the Basilica, he released several recordings of sacred choral music, presented concerts in the US and abroad, and was featured on Public Radio International.
Active as a composer, Dr. Latona is published by Canticanova Publications, G.I.A, and Morningstar Music Publishers and received commissions from the Knights of Columbus; Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, the Diocese of Helena, as well as by the Archdioceses of Washington and New York for the Apostolic visit of His Holiness Benedict XVI to the United States in 2008. .
Dr. Latona is a graduate of Bucknell University (B. Mus.), the Yale School of Music (M. Mus.), and the Manhattan School of Music (D.M.A.), and serves as chair of the Conference of Roman Catholic Cathedral Musicians, and is former chair of the DCAGO Foundation.

Daniel Stipe, Organ

A native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Daniel Stipe started playing the piano before he could walk, and studied piano in high school with Elwyn Ratliff and organ with Casey Cantwell. At the University of North Texas, he studied organ with Jess Eschbach and piano with Adam Wodnicki, and was named the 2004-05 Presser Scholar for outstanding achievement in the music department. He went on to earn a master’s degree in organ performance from Westminster Choir College in 2012 as a student of Ken Cowan, where he also studied improvisation with Bruce Neswick and Peter Richard Conte.
Mr. Stipe’s passion for liturgical music of the highest quality has led him to produce numerous sacred choral, solo vocal and organ works, in addition to hymn arrangements and reharmonisations.
His transcriptions of large orchestral works for the organ, including Elgar’s Enigma Variations, Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite, and Brahms’ Fourth Symphony, are noted for their flexibility and elegant solutions. As a collaborator, he has served five times as the accompanist for choirs singing in residency or concerts at major English cathedrals, has accompanied countless vocal and choral ensembles, and has an extensive knowledge of the string and wind repertory.
Equally at home as a solo recitalist, collaborator and arranger on both the piano and the organ, Mr. Stipe’s broad array of abilities lends a depth of understanding and excitement to his music-making. His large and varied concert repertory, with special focus on works of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, continues to delight audiences wherever he performs. He is a prizewinner in the William Hall Pipe Organ Competition in San Antonio (where he also garnered the Hymn-playing Prize), the Tulsa Crescendo Music Awards, the Fort Wayne National Organ Playing Competition, and the AGO/Quimby Region VII Competition for Young Organists. In 2014 he was featured on the Richmond AGO’s Repertory Recital Series.
He maintains an active concert schedule, with recent performances in Richmond; Tulsa; Nashville; Chattanooga; Knoxville; Princeton; New York City; Hartford; Denver; and Atlanta. He serves as Director of Music at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Jennifer McPherson, Organ

Jennifer McPherson holds a Master of Music degree in Historical Performance from Oberlin Conservatory of Music (2015). As a student at Oberlin, she studied organ with Dr. Jonathan Moyer and harpsichord with Webb Wiggins. Jennifer received her undergraduate degree from College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. At Holy Cross, she studied as Organ Scholar of the class of 2013 with James David Christie.
At the age of 21, Jennifer was awarded Third Prize in the 2012 International Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck Organ Competition in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. In the summer of 2013, she won First Prize in the AGO Quimby Region I competition and was featured as a Rising Star soloist at the National AGO Convention in Boston, MA the following year. In the spring of 2015, Jennifer performed alongside other selected Oberlin musicians at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. She also performed with Oberlin Baroque at the 2015 Boston Early Music Festival.

Daniel Benjamin Sañez is Director of Music and Liturgy for the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond, VA, where he leads liturgical celebrations for the parish and for the Diocese of Richmond. Daniel is also Artistic Director of the Music for a Cathedral Space Concert Series, which presents an array of high-quality performing-arts events at the cathedral.
Before his appointment at the cathedral, he was Director of Music, Organist, and Choirmaster for the Church of Saint Catherine of Siena in New York City, Associate Director of Music for the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception,
and Assistant Director of Music at Holy Trinity Church in Georgetown, D.C.
While in New York, Daniel was Artistic Director of the Sounds of Siena Concert Series featuring the resident, professional choir, Schola Dominicana at several concerts every year. Daniel also served in the Music Commission of the Archdiocese of New York and as Director of Music for the inaugural Men’s Conference in the Archdiocese of New York. He also led the music for Solemn Pontifical Vespers in the Extraordinary Form during the premiere Sacra Liturgia Conference, the first such conference in the United States.
A Hollywood, CA, native, Daniel has performed with the Los Angeles (L.A.) Children’s Chorus, L.A. Master Chorale, Paul Salamunovich, L.A. Opera, Placido Domingo, the Kronos Quartet, Richmond Symphony; and conductors Esa-Pekka Salonen, John Williams, Keith Lockhart, and Jeanette Sorrell. He has concertized throughout the United States of America, Canada, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, and Germany. At the closing concert for the American Guild of Organists 2010 Convention in Washington, D.C., Daniel gave the world premiere of James MacMillan’s “Tota Pulchra Es” with the Choir of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception under Basilica Director of Music Dr. Peter Latona. He was a featured recitalist during the National Association of Pastoral Musicians 2009 Convention in Chicago. Daniel has performed for His Holiness Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, the Cardinals and Bishops of the United States, the President of the United States, the White House staff, and the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Daniel is a graduate of Boston College where he studied organ and choral conducting. As a Fulbright Fellow in Leipzig, Germany, he continued organ studies at the famed Thomaskirche, where J. S. Bach served as music director for twenty-seven years. Daniel earned the Master of Music in Historical Performance at the prestigious Oberlin College Conservatory of Music where he studied organ, harpsichord, fortepiano, voice, and choral conducting. Among his teachers are John Finney, James David Christie, Bernard Lagacé, Lionel Rogg, David Boe, Ullrich Böhme, Lisa Goode Crawford, Hugh Floyd, Salvatore Champange, and Max von Egmond. Daniel is a member of the Conference of Roman Catholic Cathedral Musicians, Organ Historical Society, American Guild of Organists, Church Music Association of America, American Choral Directors Association, and National Association of Pastoral Musicians.
The Cathedral Choir: This program enriches, embellishes, and supports the celebration of the Liturgy through God’s gift of music. Discernment of this gift through an informal audition, the ability to read music, and experience as a choral singer are required. Rehearsals are each Thursday from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm and 45 minutes prior to each Liturgy at which this choir is scheduled to sing. The “requirements” for the Cathedral Choir include the ability to read music, prior choral experience, and a brief audition/interview. At the brief audition/interview, you will sing a song (or part of a song) of your choice; you will sing a series of vocal exercises; and you will sight sing a part of a choral piece.
Attention children who love to sing who are 2nd through 5th grade! Cathedral will once again have a children’s choir that will sing at the 4:00 pm Mass on Christmas Eve and the 9:00 am Mass Easter Sunday. Leading up to those Masses, the children’s choir will rehearse for three Sunday morning rehearsals before Christmas Eve and Easter. Mrs. Amy Hruska will lead the choir and looks forward to working with the children of Cathedral.

Lauren Clay Tompkins has been a cantor and soprano section leader at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond, VA since early 2015. A Richmond native, Lauren is no stranger to area congregations, having held several similar positions over the past decade. Love of music has brought her beyond the doors of the church into the wider community, featuring as a soloist in concerts for the Richmond Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and as a veteran member of the James River Singers. A soprano, she has a background in vocal performance and musical theatre from Appomattox Regional Governor’s School and has a special interest in Early Music, having studied voice with Nancy Zylstra and Penelope Jensen at Oberlin Conservatory’s Baroque Performance Institute. Lauren’s interests are wide-ranging: from studying acting in college to receiving a degree in International Studies from VCU. These days, when she is not singing, you can find Lauren loving her work supporting women as a birth doula and engaged in the 24/7 job of caring for her three sweet, vivacious children!
Ian Richardson, bass-baritone,who has been praised for his “rich vocal power,” is a native Iowan now residing in Richmond, Virginia. Since his completion of graduate school, Ian has performed in many opera companies, including Kentucky Opera, St. Petersburg Opera, and Des Moines Metro Opera, as well as others. While experimenting in both the low baritone and high bass repertoire, he has enjoyed performing the roles of Olin Blitch in Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah, Figaro in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, and Timur in Puccini’s Turandot, as well as roles composed by Benjamin Britten, Gian Carlo Menotti, Charles Gounod, and Giuseppe Verdi. In Richmond, he has performed with Capitol Opera in their productions of Die Fledermaus and La Rinuncia. He is a regular cantor at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, and a choir member at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. When he’s not singing, he enjoys composing classical music, playing jazz and double bass, and improvising on the piano.
Rondy Michael Lazaro, M.D., is a tenor with the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Parish Choir and the Richmond Symphony Chorus. He is a former member of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, Stanford Chamber Chorale, Stanford University Singers, University of Virginia Chamber Singers, and the University of Virginia University Singers. Dr. Lazaro has studied voice with Gregory Wait, Norm DeVol, and Bridgid Eversole. He has sung in masterclasses for Christòpheren Nomura, John Bellemer, Rudolf Jansen, and Ragnar Bohlin. He is also an active violinist and conductor. Dr. Lazaro graduated from Stanford University in 2008 with a B.A. in Music (concentration in Conducting) and a B.S. in Biology. He was the winner of the 2008 Louis Sudler Prize in the Performing and Creative Arts from the Stanford University Department of Music. He earned his M.D. from the University of Virginia in 2014. Dr. Lazaro is currently a resident physician in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Virginia Commonwealth University.
The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart welcomes and would like to offer visiting choirs an opportunity to share their talents.
Guest choirs are invited to sing at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart as the calendar allows. The Cathedral reserves the right to reschedule a choir should an unforeseen event of importance occur.
To request an opportunity to sing at the Cathedral:
Send a written request via letter or email with a description of your choir and dates and times that you would prefer. Send a list with time lengths of the sacred repertoire prepared for the requested Mass. Include a recording of 5-10 minutes in length of the current choir. Please note that all guest choirs that are approved perform gratis. Music without accompaniment or with organ accompaniment is preferred. Please allow thirty days for a performance request response.
The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond, VA, seeks professional singers for permanent and substitute positions for all voice parts as well as cantor opportunities. (Semi-professional choir. The professional core will constitute an ensemble separate from the semi-professional whole.)
Substitute choristers must be available on Sunday mornings.
Choristers are engaged from September through June with Thursday night rehearsals, reoccurring Sunday Masses at 9 and 11 a.m., occasional diocesan events, other events as scheduled, and concert opportunities.
The cathedral’s music program welcomes those who wish to make music at a high level and are thoroughly trained in the vocal arts, having earned at least a Bachelor’s in Music/Voice, or equivalent experience/skills. Exceptional sight-singing ability, flexibility in sound, and mastery of differing musical styles are equally important as dedication, commitment, and leadership skills.
Auditions are in progress and will continue until positions are filled. The audition will include a rendering of an early music aria of the applicant’s choice, sight-singing of Gregorian chant (in modern notation), and sight-singing of a renaissance Mass.
