Pastoral Care of the Sick
“Master, the one you love is ill.”
—John 11:3
Christ is close to those who are suffering; he shares their hardships and joins them to his death and resurrection for the salvation of the world.
The Anointing of the Sick is administered to someone who is seriously ill, and not only on the verge of death. This sacrament can be received in case of a physical ailment, mental illness, old age, or surgery. Holy Communion can be brought to someone who is unable to regularly attend Mass. When death is near, the last rites—Anointing of the Sick, Penance, and the Eucharist (Viaticum)—should be received.
